Clemson vs LSU Preview

Clemson opens the 2026 season with one of the toughest assignments in college football, traveling to Baton Rouge to face No. 11 LSU under the lights at Tiger Stadium. The matchup gives Dabo Swinney’s Tigers an immediate opportunity to rebound from last season’s 7–6 finish and avenge their 17–10 loss to LSU in the 2025 opener. Clemson turns the offense over to quarterback Christopher Vizzina, who won the starting job after spending three seasons behind Cade Klubnik. Vizzina showed promise in his lone previous start, throwing for 317 yards and three touchdowns against SMU, and he’ll have experienced targets including TJ Moore and Bryant Wesco Jr. Clemson’s best path to an upset could be controlling the line of scrimmage defensively, leaning on a run defense that ranked among the nation’s better units last season, and giving Vizzina enough protection to attack an LSU defense featuring significant personnel changes.

LSU begins a new era under Lane Kiffin, adding another major storyline to a game that already carries national significance. The Tigers have rebuilt much of their offense through the transfer portal, with experienced dual-threat quarterback Sam Leavitt taking command of a Kiffin system expected to play aggressively and create stress with tempo, formations and vertical shots. Clemson’s rebuilt secondary will be tested, but LSU must also prove it can consistently run against a Clemson front that was strong in that area a year ago. With Clemson breaking in a new quarterback and LSU introducing a new coaching staff and numerous new starters, turnovers, third-down execution and explosive plays could decide a game in which neither side has much current-season film on the other. LSU has the advantages of experience at quarterback and one of college football’s most intimidating home environments, but Clemson has enough defensive talent and receiving firepower to make this a four-quarter battle.
